Home Media Magazine recently posted the results of a study of the all-time top-selling titles on cable VOD. Broad comedies dominate the list, with "The Hangover" taking the top spot. Interestingly, none of the top 5 movies in domestic box office from 2008 ("The Dark Knight", "Iron Man", "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull", "Hancock" and "Wall-E" or 2007 ("Spider-Man 3", "Shrek the Third", "Transformers", "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" and "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix") made the list, perhaps because they're largely franchises and thus more conducive for both a theatrical experience and home media ownership, rather than rental.
As VOD is exclusively a rental model, at least on cable systems, it makes sense that broad comedies would over-index (I'll admit to renting a few on this list on iTunes). As VOD windows collapse and studios are more willing to embrace the technology, it will be interesting to see, at least from a studio level, if these trends continue.
